- R.I.P. Dick Trickle. He wasn’t Cole’s biological father, but it makes no difference, and he certainly wasn’t any kind of new school driver. As sure as rubbin’ is racin’, the hammer had to drop one final time for Trickle, but this isn’t how we expected it to happen. To the best of the Midwest:

For whatever reason (probably because I don’t watch their games), I always have a hard time keeping track of just who’s on the New York Rangers, but I did have in my mind that they were favorites in the East this year, and I was surprised they weren’t the ones meeting LA in the finals. Might as well face it, you’re addicted to glove: Josh Hamilton’s epic night, and a lesson learned
Lately, it seems like an epic Josh Hamilton night is likely to be of the not-so-good variety, but last night was epic and historic in a very on-the-field, baseball kind of way:

Hamilton hit four home runs in a game against the previously self-defying hot Orioles, which also is historic because it probably is the best night anybody’s had in Baltimore since the days when Gram and Emmylou were singing “Streets of Baltimore.”
And this time, I was the one learning a lesson after a Josh Hamilton epic night, finally getting an answer to a question I’d had since I was a kid: When you hit a home run, do you get an RBI for yourself? The answer is yes, and it came courtesy of the radio call that declared Hamilton had four two-run homers, an eight-RBI night. I can do that math.
Sportsnight in the D: ALCS & MNF
For the first time in ten years, Monday Night Football was in Detroit, and following a 24-13 victory over Chicago, the Lions are 5-0 for the first time since 1956. The home crowd affected the game, helping to cause the Bears’ nine false-start penalties, and officials only had to stop play once for a foreign object thrown onto the field, which I think is pretty good, all things considered. ESPN’s decision to replace now-banished Hank Jr.‘s traditional open with a Detroit-themed segment narrated by legend Barry Sanders was a nice touch too. All of this helped distract Motown sports fans from the painful, extra-inning demise of their baseball team that concluded moments before kickoff. Even if the Tigers were healthy, I’m not sure Texas still isn’t the better team, and the Tigers certainly aren’t healthy. Down 0-2, they return to Detroit for the third and fourth games of the series. Right now, coming home is about the only thing cutting in their favor in this series. If Calvin Johnson can swing a bat, now would be the time for him to speak up.
